YOU is a series of gum packaging designs that are sustainable, re-fillable or reusable, and allows the user to store their waste to reduce littering. Often when there are no trash cans available, we tend to keep things in our pockets and this idea is what drove the visual design of my packaging. There are two gum series created based on its origin of inspiration: the minty jean series (Singapore) and the fruity kimono series (Japan).

After my initial research I discovered that chewing gum is one of the most littered items leading to Singapore’s ban on the treat completely. This research sparked my concept of developing a package design which allows the user to store the chewed gum for later disposal if garbage cans are not available. My first iteration was inspired by jeans and their pockets — the minty jean gum series.

After my initial iteration, I went back to my research and found that it was common in Japanese culture to take their trash home to dispose of due to the lack of garbage cans in public spaces which drove the idea for my second design; a kimono inspired sleeve design with an obi knot pocket — the fruity kimono gum series.
