Context

The colour blue is so universal, but on the spectrum of blues, there is something for everyone; it is also my favourite colour. In this project I wanted to understand what it means to be in love with the colour blue, the loneliness, desire, and the complexity of it all. I used Maggie Nelson’s Bluets and Rebecca Solnit’s A Field Guide To Getting Lost as the two main texts. Both authors examine the colour blue and its relationship to love, loneliness, distance, and desire. It weaves scientific knowledge, the chemistry and physics of blue, with the poetic and everyday nature of their personal stories. For imagery, I used the work of Edmund L. Mitchell, an amateur photographer active during the 1960s - 1980s. His photography captures “found blue”. His photography captures the ordinariness and brevity of life. It also represents the different spectrum of emotions of blue.
